‘Maverick’ manager’s dad now claims Tottenham wanted to hire him last summer

Tottenham Hotspur landed on the appointment of Ange Postecoglou last summer but it wasn’t always clear the Aussie would arrive in north London.

Following Antonio Conte’s departure back in March last year, Tottenham began their fourth search for a permanent manager since Mauricio Pochettino was sacked in 2019.

Pochettino was heavily linked with a sensational return to Spurs himself before sealing a move to London rivals Chelsea.

Other candidates such as now Liverpool boss Arne Slot and Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann were also in the mix.

Tottenham eventually decided on Ange Postecoglou, who left Celtic for north London in June 2023.

The Aussie has gone on to enjoy an encouraging first year at Spurs having delivered a fifth-place finish after losing star man Harry Kane.

But things could have seemingly worked out differently as a manager’s dad has claimed his son received interest from Tottenham last summer.

Vincent Kompany’s dad makes Tottenham claim

After a disappointing season with Burnley which resulted in a 19th-place finish and relegation from the Premier League, Kompany’s move to Bayern Munich has raised eyebrows.

The Belgian manager, who was previously labelled a ‘maverick’ by Tony Cascarino, was linked with a move to the likes of Spurs and Chelsea after guiding Burnley to a Championship title.

While his latest move has shocked the footballing world, he was undoubtedly a man in demand last year.

And his father, Pierre Kompany, has claimed that Spurs did indeed come ‘knocking’ for his son’s signature.

“It was a surprise to the whole world [Bayern move],” he told HLN. “Well, not for me. If you look at the teams that have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again.

“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”

Spurs have landed on the right man in Ange Postecoglou

While there are still many doubters over Postecoglou’s start to life at Spurs, you’d imagine the club are hardly regretting missing out on Kompany.

Postecoglou’s stubbornness when it comes to his attacking approach has received some criticism amongst Tottenham supporters. But when you look at Kompany’s year in the Premier League with Burnley, he was undoubtedly far worse in that regard.

His refusal to adapt ultimately led to Burnley picking up just 24 points and dropping back down to the Championship.

With that being said, the former Manchester City star has somehow managed to land one of the biggest managerial jobs in Europe and will link up with Kane next season.
