Antonio Conte wants to sign player who Ange Postecoglou labelled 'very important' after landing Napoli job

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is set to land his next job in management after his Spurs departure.

The Italian boss left Spurs back in March last year after a sensational rant following a 3-3 draw at Southampton.

Tottenham have since made progress under Ange Postecoglou, who arrived last summer and delivered a fifth-place finish in his debut season in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte has been waiting for the right opportunity to present itself and he’s set to be named as Napoli manager.

Conte is set to sign a three-year deal with the Italian giants and is seemingly already laying out plans for the summer transfer window.

As well as targeting a reunion with Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku, Conte is reportedly eyeing a move for a Spurs player who was key during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Conte wants to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Spurs are expected to shift plenty of current players this summer and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg certainly falls into that category.

The Dane was previously a key man under former managers Jose Mourinho and Conte. But he’s largely been used as a rotation option under Postecoglou.

Hojbjerg has already admitted he isn’t satisfied with his role at Spurs and with just a year left on his current deal, Tottenham are expected to offload him this summer.

Now, Corriere dello Sport claims that Conte could offer the 28-year-old a way out of Spurs.

Napoli were already keen on the midfielder back in January and could reignite their interest in a player Conte knows very well.

What Postecoglou has said about Hojbjerg amid Spurs exit rumours

Despite managing just eight starts in the Premier League under Postecoglou, Hojbjerg proved to be a useful option from the bench last season.

The Denmark international often underwhelmed when handed the opportunity to start but did help Spurs see out games on numerous occasions.

When Yves Bissouma picked up a red card at Luton Town back in October, Hojbjerg was the man who stepped in at the base of midfield.

The Aussie boss labelled him a ‘very important’ player for the current Spurs side and praised his professionalism.

“I don’t think there was any time during the transfer window where I thought Pierre would move,” Postecoglou said. “The discussions I had with him were that he was here and wanted to contribute, he wanted to be part of what we were building.

“It is obvious someone that has played regularly would have wanted to play more but ultimately our performances have been strong and he has had to bide his time.

“He has also been very important in a lot of the games that we’ve won late or had to shore up late. He has been one of the people who has helped us and it is not like he hasn’t contributed at all. He’s been a really important part for us.

“We wouldn’t be in this position if we were just reliant on our starting XI. It is something we impress on all of the guys that as disappointed as you are at not starting, it doesn’t mean you are not playing. You are still playing at some point and what you do with those minutes will help us be successful and push your own cause.

“With Pierre, he is a professional and very determined to win a spot in the team. He presents himself well every day and over a 38-game season all of these guys will get an opportunity at some point. What they do with that is up to them.”
