Exclusive: Nottingham Forest make final decision on Giovanni Reyna after his loan deal ends

Nottingham Forest have now made their final decision on Giovanni Reyna ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

The American winger joined Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window on a short-term loan deal from Borussia Dortmund.

Giovanni Reyna‘s loan spell at the City Ground has now come to an end with the club announcing on Wednesday that he’d returned to Dortmund.

However, that is not to say Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side could not approach the Bundesliga giants to discuss a potential permanent deal for the 21-year-old.

Nottingham Forest News has now spoken with HITC Football‘s transfer guru Graeme Bailey to discuss what now lies ahead of Reyna with the summer transfer window opening next week.

Nottingham Forest make Giovanni Reyna decision after impressing

Having joined in the winter window, Reyna was only able to rack up nine appearances in the Premier League which offered 230 minutes of football.

Only two of those appearances came from the starting XI with the American failing to feature in any of the final three games of the campaign.

The 21-year-old’s first start in a Forest shirt came April against Wolves where he was able to provide an assist in their 2-2 draw.

However, Bailey has now told Nottingham Forest News that the club have no intention on working a return out for the American, despite being pleased with what they saw.

“Nottingham Forest are not currently looking to bring Gio Reyna back,” Bailey said.

“They were pleased with him and the loan move did go well, but, at the moment, they have other options they are looking at.

“Forest have options after staying up. They say they don’t have to sell anyone, but there is a lot of interest in some of their players.”

Giovanni Reyna offered more than just an attacking threat

Reyna may have been signed as an attacking threat, but it is apparent the 21-year-old was able to offer more for the team than just goals and assists.

The American may well have struggled to provide the end product in the final third, but it has to be considered he was never really able to maintain any regular game time in the starting XI.

But when he did take to the pitch, he did provide a lot for the team’s efforts as they fought to retain their Premier League status.

Nuno was pleased with Reyna following the game against Wolves where he said: ““He played good and he gave us good possession. He had good situations, good passing and finishing. Reyna is a good option for us and different to what we normally have.”

However, it seems the Portuguese manager was never convinced that the 21-year-old was good enough to become a regular starter with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga ahead of him.
