Report: Sporting director now really wants to sign £50m Liverpool player; he's followed him since 2019

Liverpool might want to bring in new players this summer but it looks like they’ve also got a job on keeping hold of some of their top stars too.

The Reds are looking towards a new era under Arne Slot and the Dutchman is apparently keen to make a full assessment on his current squad before deciding on new signings.

Of course, we are likely to see new players signed as part of the Slot revolution.

But on the other side of things, Slot could also face a battle to keep some of his key players.

And one of those key players is winger, Luis Diaz, who is being courted by Barcelona.

Why Deco really wants to bring Luis Diaz to Barcelona

According to a report from Sport over in Spain, Diaz is the player Barcelona sporting director Deco would really like to sign.

It’s claimed that Deco sees Diaz as the more ideal player than Atletico Bilbao winger Nico Willams, who could cost as much as £100m.

The report states how Deco has had his eye on Diaz ever since the Colombian signed for Porto back in 2019 and he’s followed his progress ever since.

Liverpool paid around £50m all in to sign Diaz back in January 2022.

The Reds are not expected to let Diaz go easily and still very much see him as a key member of their squad ahead of next season.

However, a huge bid could change things, albeit Barcelona are hardly flush with cash right now.

Luis Diaz should avoid Barcelona for now

While he might have a dream from being a young player to play for the Spanish giants, Luis Diaz is in a good place at Anfield right now.

He has the chance to show Arne Slot he can be the main man at the club and with Mohamed Salah potentially going in a season or two, it’s a real chance for Diaz to step up.

Further, Barcelona are a bit of a shambles at the moment in terms of how they are ran. They are reliant on young players coming through and then using ‘economic levers’ just to stay above board right now.

Diaz, then, should stick it out at Liverpool and avoid the potential for a downturn in performance over at Barca.
