‘I understand’: Alasdair Gold shares what he’s now hearing about Djed Spence’s future

Djed Spence has never really got going at Tottenham.

The right-back clearly wasn’t wanted by Antonio Conte, being shipped out on loan to Rennes after six months during the 2022/23 season, while two further loan spells at Leeds and Genoa followed last term.

Now, Spence is due back at Tottenham, but to say his future is uncertain would be an understatement.

Indeed, the full-back doesn’t seem to factor into Ange Postecoglou’s plans at all, and speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has shared some insight into the defender’s future.

According to Gold, Genoa are willing to do some sort of deal for Spence, while the player himself is open to the move believing that his time in Serie A was good for his career.

“Genoa are willing to get some kind of agreement there. They don’t want to pay the £8.5m that was agreed in the option.

“From what I understand Djed would be open to going back there as well. He quite enjoyed his time at Genoa, and it was a good moment for him in his career.”

Spence should leave

Whether or not Genoa cough up the cash to land Spence this summer remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, the defender should leave Tottenham.

Spence isn’t going to get the gametime he wants or deserves at Spurs, and it may just be time to draw a line under what has been a very difficult period of the defender’s career.

At one point, Spence was one of the most promising young players in the Football League, but now, that hype has completely gone and he finds himself in a position where he needs to rebuild his career.

Tottenham aren’t the right club for Spence, and this summer should spell the end of this strange chapter in the full-back’s career.
