Kieran Trippier reveals what he really thinks of Daniel Levy after ‘sour’ Tottenham talks

Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier has shed some light on his conversations with Daniel Levy before he left.

The England international departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2019 for Atletico Madrid after four years in north London.

Tottenham fans have since seen Trippier line up against them after he made the move to Newcastle United two years ago.

But his time in north London did not end well with Trippier forced to leave Mauricio Pochettino’s side in search of more regular first-team football.

Trippier started in the Champions League final just months before leaving Spurs where he ended up returning to that very stadium in joining Atleti for £20m.

And he has now looked back on his meetings with Daniel Levy in the lead-up to his departure as he discussed some of the more difficult moments of his career.

Kieran Trippier reveals difficult talks with Daniel Levy

Since moving Trippier on to Atletico Madrid in 2019, Spurs endured a few years without a standout replacement at right-back.

Pedro Porro has now arrived at Hotspur Way and has filled the void left behind by the likes of Trippier and Kyle Walker.

But Spurs remain in the hunt for another right-back this summer as Vanderson is believed to be Tottenham’s plan to upgrade Emerson Royal.

Since Trippier’s return to the Premier League, he has established himself as one of the league’s most creative full-backs with 10 assists in the league alone this season.

Speaking ahead of this summer’s Euros, Trippier spoke to Gary Neville on The Overlap and admitted his exit from Spurs was ‘sour’.

“Just I think in the way that I left, I talked with Daniel and the manager,” Trippier said.

“It was difficult, of course it was. I just asked ‘am I part of the plans’, he said to speak to the manager. I went to the manager and asked if I was part of his plans and he said ‘speak to Daniel’. I just kept getting thrown around like a yo-yo.

“As a player you just want clarity. If I need to move on then that’s all I need to hear. Just a bit of honesty. Just tell me the truth and no problem. Players come and go, that’s no problem.”

Kieran Trippier did have some positives to say about Tottenham

It was not all negatives when Trippier looked back on his time in north London with the defender saying the semi-final trip to the Johan Cruyff Arena was one of the best stadiums he’d played in.

Trippier started in the game in Amsterdam which wrote its name in Tottenham history as one of the best nights following the stunning comeback.

“I think that’s up there when we played their with Tottenham… the comeback three-all. I don’t know if that’s just because of the occasion, but yeah, what a night that was!” Trippier said.

Trippier was certainly part of some of Spurs’ best moments in recent years, however, his injury record in recent years show Spurs may have parted with him just at the right time.
