‘Wouldn’t surprise me’: Journalist wouldn’t be shocked if Chelsea now tried to sign ‘brilliant’ striker

Dominic Solanke could be on the move this summer.

The England striker has been electric for Bournemouth this season, and now, it’s been reported by The Athletic that Solanke has a club-specific £65m release clause.

TBR Football understands that Solanke’s release clause pertains to the traditional ‘big six’ clubs with Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Man City, Man United and Liverpool all able to trigger the clause this summer.

Speaking on the Ranks FC Ultras Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing where Solanke could go next, and he’s stated that he wouldn’t be surprised at all if Chelsea went back for Solanke.

Chelsea could go for Solanke

Jones spoke about Solanke and where he could end up.

“Another striker Dominic Solanke being spoken about in The Athletic. He has a release clause of £65m in his contract and it can only be activated by certain clubs.

“Interesting that is. They say that Solanke is being tracked across this season, but his release clause is limited to a select group of sides and the identity of those teams is undisclosed.

“I haven’t dug into this one yet, it’s definitely one for me to look further into today.

“He’s been brilliant and Bournemouth won’t want to lose him but the player’s head would be turned if there was serious interest in him. It wouldn’t surprise me if Chelsea again or Newcastle were to look in his direction.”

Chelsea re-signing another player

If Solanke ended up back at Stamford Bridge he would be the latest in a long list of players who have been re-signed by Chelsea over the years.

The likes of Nemanja Matic, David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku have all had multiple spells at Chelsea, and there have been a mixed bag of results there.

Matic and Luiz were fantastic signings the second time around, but, unfortunately, Lukaku wasn’t quite so successful.

Whether or not Solanke would be more like Matic or Lukaku remains to be seen, but it is interesting that Chelsea could again re-sign another former player.
