'Dangerous': Gary Lineker shares whether he'd start Anthony Gordon for England at Euro 2024

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is hoping to be in Gareth Southgate’s starting XI for the Euros.

England kick off their campaign against Serbia on Sunday, with two Newcastle United players in contention to start for the Three Lions.

Kieran Trippier looks likely to play at left-back given Luke Shaw’s injury, and he could be joined on the left flank by Anthony Gordon. The 23-year-old has been selected to compete at his first ever major tournament, getting the nod ahead of Manchester City’s Jack Grealish.

The decision not to select Grealish has been controversial, while Marcus Rashford did not even make the preliminary squad.

With those two players absent, Gordon has a great chance to start for England in Germany.

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer agree about Anthony Gordon

And that is exactly what Gary Lineker thinks will happen, having discussed what his England starting XI would be on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast alongside Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

“I’m going with your man, Al,” he said.

“Anthony Gordon on the left. I think he’s been fantastic. He’s dangerous. He can cause problems.”

Shearer replied: “That was my three. Foden in the 10, Gordon on the left and Saka on the right. I think because of his work rate, the way he is able to get back and help the full back out, as well as in forward positions has just been brilliant this season. He would be starting for me.”

Gordon stood out on a poor night for England

Both Lineker and Shearer think Gordon should start for England, and he certainly made a case for himself on Friday.

While Southgate’s side lost to Iceland at Wembley, Gordon was one of few players to come out of the game with any real credit. He was lively down the left, getting into some really dangerous positions in the final third. On another day, he might have got an assist or two.

As has been the case with Newcastle this season, Gordon was doing most of his work in dangerous positions. He is now a decisive player – someone who can make the difference in the final third. That is why he hit double figures in goals and assists in the Premier League this season, and why he has a good chance of starting for England this summer.

It may all depend on what Southgate plans to do with Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham. If he plans to play the latter in a more advanced role then Foden could find himself on the left, which would result in Gordon being on the bench.

It is a big decision to make, but Gordon certainly has a good chance of starting for England when the Euros kick off. The Three Lions are expected to go deep into the competition, which means this could be a very big summer for Newcastle United’s number 10.
