Report: Man City board 'unanimously agree' who should replace Pep, and he could help lure two players

Manchester City fans will soon have to prepare for life without Pep Guardiola at the club – but the board ‘unanimously agree’ about who should replace him.

Currently, Pep Guardiola has a contract with the club that expires next summer.

As things currently stand, the 2024/25 season will be his last in charge, taking him up to nine years as manager of the club.

He could yet extend. But it’s also very possibly he could call it a day at nine years.

Either way, Manchester City would reportedly like to know his decision on this by Christmas, because replacing him will obviously be a very important decision.

Today though, there is word of who the board all agree should take over…

A number of names have been floated in recent weeks regarding potential Pep replacements.

One such person who’s been tipped to come in is Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who has just overseen a quite remarkable season over in Germany.

Alonso’s side won the double, losing one game the entire season which was the Europa League final.

His team finished 17 points clear of second-placed Stuttgart and 18 clear of Bayern Munich in third.

Alonso is staying at Leverkusen for next season as they compete in the Champions League, and it has been reported by Football Transfers that City officials ‘unanimously agree’ that he should succeed Guardiola when he leaves the Etihad. This is only if Guardiola elects to step down.

City officials believe Alonso can continue Pep’s legacy at the club.

And interestingly, City officials also believe that Alonso coming in would help them to sign Florian Wirtz and Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad.

Alonso would be perfect

Here’s hoping there is some truth in this report because Alonso really would be the ideal replacement for Pep.

He has done a truly extraordinary job over in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen in such a short space of time, and it is little wonder he has now been linked with a lot of top jobs already.

But City should try and make sure that he replaces Pep if he is going to step down.

Ultimately, Alonso’s possession-based style of football is not massively different from what City fans see now at the Etihad, and one would imagine the players would get to grips with his methods fairly quickly if he came in.
