MLS expert shares who he would pick between Inter Miami's Luis Suarez and Christian Benteke for 2024 All-Star game

Andrew Wiebe has shared who he would pick for MLS’s All-Star roster later this summer between Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez and Christian Benteke.

The former Liverpool attackers are in contention to be selected for the annual MLS showpiece event, where this year the league’s best players will flock to Columbus, Ohio to take on a Liga MX All-Star squad.

Having lost to Arsenal last year, the MLS All-Stars will be keen to get another win against their Mexican rivals, where Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are likely to be included in the final squad for the game.

And MLS expert Wiebe has now revealed who he would select between Suarez and DC United striker Benteke.

Suarez snubbed for All-Star XI by MLS expert for Benteke

Speaking on MLS Extratime, Wiebe shared that he would pick Benteke for his All-Star XI against the Liga MX All-Stars, with the pundit noting that the Belgian’s style of play could be more suited for this game.

Whilst Suarez’s finishing ability is unparalleled in MLS, Benteke’s physical presence could be more useful in a game against Liga MX’s best players, with Inter Miami being comfortably beaten by Mexican side Monterrey earlier this year.

Wiebe said: “Between Suarez and Benteke, just for the aesthetic part of this, I’d pick Benteke, simply for the reason that this is an All-Star game and chemistry is going to be lacking a bit between all these guys, like we saw against Arsenal last year.

“The last Liga MX All-Star game was a bit different, of course, it was more competitive. But I think having Benteke as a security blanket in terms of play could be very useful for this format.”

Inter Miami will want as few players selected as possible for MLS All-Star weekend

All-Star weekend is one of those bombastic American sports ideas that always looks out of place when placed into the context of soccer, with MLS often ridiculed by non-US fans for the annual tradition.

Whilst the event itself is fun and can produce some incredible moments, for clubs like Inter Miami, they will want as few players as possible selected for the week-long event at the end of July.

As we know, Messi and Suarez will just be returning from the Copa America, and the last thing Inter Miami will want is their two star players competing in a glorified friendly and potentially being risked, with injuries to the duo likely at their age.
