Movie star's regrets over being Hollywood heartthrob - 'I'm saggy and balding now'

Movie actor Jude Law has regrets over reluctance to embrace his Hollywood heartthrob status now that he’s in his fifties.

You may not remember the first time you saw Jude Law shine on screen, but he’s been doing it for quite some time. The 51-year-old English actor attracted serious buzz when he starred in the 1999 thriller The Talented Mr Ripley, earning him an Oscar nomination and opening doors to so many opportunities. Since then he’s worked with the masterful Steven Spielberg in A.I. Artificial Intelligence, played Sherlock Holmes’ right-hand man Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie capers, portrayed a young Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts movies, and wooed Cameron Diaz in the Christmas classic The Holiday. This paints a portrait of a life with no regrets, yet that’s not exactly true to Jude’s story…

Jude Law regrets not ‘playing handsome’ more in his heyday

Whether he feels he fully embraced it or not, Jude fast became a Hollywood heartthrob and continued to tackle a string of ladies’ man roles in the 2000s. That being said, he revealed during an interview with DuJour Magazine that he wished he’d embraced this side of himself more now he’s older.

“I didn’t feel like I really ever leaned into playing handsome, but there were roles that required an attractive energy,” he recollected. “I was trying to play against my looks in my early 20s, and now that I’m saggy and balding, I wish I had played it up.”

Now in his fifties, Jude explained that more recent roles haven’t “leaned in to any sort of attraction.” Despite his regrets, he admitted, “It’s been satisfying not having to turn that switch on.” A silver lining, if you will.

In stark contrast to the slick womanizers of some of his older movies, Jude is settled into being a family man. He married his second wife Phillipa Coan in 2019 after divorcing Sadie Frost all the way back in 2003.

He has seven children in total, his seventh—and second with Phillipa—welcomed into the world as recently as February 2024.

Jude Law spills the tea on ‘weighted costume’ for latest role

Opening in theaters on Friday, June 14th 2024, Jude’s latest film is Firebrand, a British historical drama in which he portrays Henry VIII, co-starring alongside Alicia Vikander.

He certainly ditches the heartthrob looks in this role, undergoing a transformation to play the former King Of England.

“It took so much time every morning to get into this huge, weighted costume and I would stay in it for the rest of the day,” he opened up to DuJour.

“You could rehearse in jeans and a T-shirt, but then you would turn up in this enormous outfit and realize you’re going to knock everyone over. So you might as well maintain that sense of Henry’s shape and size.”

It’s an ambitious and challenging role, the kind he has impressively never shied away from.
