Aston Villa ‘paying close attention’ to Douglas Luiz successor who’s better than Weston McKennie

Aston Villa are said to have a strong interest in one transfer target who could help Unai Emery replace Douglas Luiz.

Unai Emery and Monchi are braced to have a busy summer at Villa Park, with incomings and outgoings expected.

Aston Villa will be in a sell-to-buy situation in the transfer window due to growing PSR concerns.

Douglas Luiz’s future has been highly speculated as a result, although, Villa should aim higher than the swap deal proposed by Juventus, something a different transfer target could ensure.

Aston Villa have strong interest in transfer target Giovani Lo Celso

Villa have been linked to Giovani Lo Celso this summer, with the Argentine expected to part ways with Spurs in the upcoming window.

Following on from his previous update, Fabrizio Romano has delved into the extent of Villa’s interest in the midfielder, via The Daily Briefing.

In his latest column, the renowned journalist admitted that Villa ‘could be a destination’ for the 28-year-old due to the fact the player has worked with Emery before.

Romano relayed that Villa are ‘paying close attention’ to Lo Celso, who is braced to receive ‘plenty of interest’ this summer as he prepares to leave North London.

Links to Lo Celso come at an interesting time with reference to the doubts over Luiz, with midfielder Weston McKennie said to be one player who could be involved in a swap deal.

While Villa will be eager to get the Luiz deal over the line before June 30th due to PSR concerns, Emery could aim higher than McKennie with Lo Celso.

Lo Celso is a better Douglas Luiz replacement than Weston McKennie

Given what Emery will need to find in a replacement for Luiz in Villa’s midfield, Lo Celso is a far better option than McKennie.

The Brazilian is so crucial to how Villa play due to his presence in the final third and ability to break the lines from central midfield.

Added to that, the 26-year-old does possess defensive strengths although, it is his ball-playing and technical mastery that see him highly regarded at Villa.

For this reason, Lo Celso would be a superior candidate to replace the Juventus target over McKennie, as demonstrated by their statistics above.

The strengths shown by Luiz are mirrored and in many instances, outshone by the Spurs outcast, with the United States international falling way behind in his creative outlet in comparison.

Given what Luiz offers to Villa, being far more than a holding midfielder, the manager could locate the best replacement for the Brazilian in Lo Celso, who offers a better match to the 26-year-old than McKennie.
