Motorcyclist killed in crash with truck on N.J. Turnpike ramp

A 37-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a truck early Saturday on a New Jersey Turnpike ramp in Newark, authorities said.

Ryan E. Schmalz was riding on the southbound ramp to Exit 14 at 2:31 a.m. when he struck a truck hauling a utility trailer, State Police said. The truck had been stopped on the access road at the intersection of the ramp and was crossing the ramp when the 2:30 a.m. crash took place, officials said.

Schmalz, of Keyport, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Schmalz is survived by his wife, two children, parents, siblings and many other relatives, according to an online obituary.
