Brennan Johnson did something for Tottenham last season which Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer couldn’t match

Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson was able to outperform both Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer in one aspect last season.

A relatively successful first season for Ange Postecoglou is in the books at Tottenham with European football returning for the upcoming campaign.

Perhaps one of the most impressive things to come from the Australian’s first term as the Spurs boss was the improved recruitment seen over his two transfer windows.

Players like Guglielmo Vicario and Micky van de Ven have been brought in and provided big improvements to the starting XI.

Brennan Johnson is another one of the players who Postecoglou has brought in and has enjoyed his first season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Drawing the curtain on his 2023/24 campaign, the Welshman was able to do something for Spurs which neither Bukayo Saka or Cole Palmer was able to do for their respective clubs.

Brennan Johnson outperformed Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer in one metric

Tottenham were handed a huge issue to overcome going into the 2023/24 campaign following the sale of Harry Kane last summer.

Instead of bringing in a new out and out striker, Spurs went into the season looking for goals from across their frontline.

Johnson was able to return a solid of five goals and 10 assists in the Premier League alone.

However, it is one specific metric which Johnson proved his worth in comparison to some of the Premier League’s most highly-regarded wingers in the league.

Over the 2023/24 term, Johnson was able to provide more key passes (29) than both Cole Palmer (27) and Bukayo Saka (25).

Johnson was also able to outperform the Premier League’s Player of the Season in Manchester City’s Phil Foden who provided 27 key passes.

A promising statistics to take out the Welshman’s first campaign in north London with European football to come next season.

Brennan Johnson still has a lot of room to improve

coming out of his first season at Spurs, there has been a lot to excite fans about Johnson who has certainly proven himself to be a smart addition.

However, he did also show areas which he needs to improve over the summer with a number of goals left out there on the pitch.

Johnson missed 16 big chances for Spurs over the campaign which was more than double that of the player coming in at second for Spurs, Richarlison (7).

Given Spurs were in need of goals to come from all over their side following Kane’s exit, there are some promising signs that Johnson could become a player who can offer a double digit return from the wing next season.
