'Would be perfect for him': ESPN pundit explains what role Chelsea's Cole Palmer should have for England

England manager Gareth Southgate will have a big decision to make with Chelsea star Cole Palmer at Euro 2024.

Many will feel that Cole Palmer should be in the England starting XI after the season he has just had.

The attacker was phenomenal for Chelsea, scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists in 33 Premier League appearances.

No player in the English top flight managed to record more goal contributions than Palmer.

Even so, with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka in the England squad, the 22-year-old starting cannot be guaranteed.

Pundit discusses what role Cole Palmer should have at Euro 2024

One pundit does not think Palmer should be getting the nod over the likes of Saka and Phil Foden.

However, he thinks the former Manchester City man can still make an impact at the tournament and should be used as a super sub.

Speaking on The Gab and Juls Show on ESPN, Julien Laurens said: “Cole Palmer is not a winger. Cole Palmer is the best super sub and impact player they have on the bench.

“So he will come on for the last half an hour, more if needed, but that would be perfect for him.”

Cole Palmer can be a super sub for England

Palmer certainly has the ability to make a difference from off the bench for England.

His quality was there for everyone to see during the 2023/24 campaign. But that is the thing, there was so much quality he really should be more than a substitute for the Three Lions.

Of course, it is difficult for Southgate to fit Palmer, Foden, Saka and Jude Bellingham all into the same team, with the last of that quartet the first or second name on the team sheet after the season he had a Real Madrid.

It is the kind of headache you want as a manager, but it also leaves Southgate with no excuses. It is a tournament England have to do well in because of the wealth of options he has.
