Nottingham Forest youngster now makes senior international debut after impressive 2023/24 season on loan

A youngster at Nottingham Forest has now made his senior international debut after a promising 2023/24 campaign on loan.

The Reds boast a rich history of promoting talent from the youth ranks, having previously promoted the likes of Michael Dawson, Jermaine Jenas, Des Walker and Brennan Johnson into the senior setup – to name a few.

Now, another prospect could soon emerge at Nottingham Forest after he made his senior international debut on Tuesday…

Aaron Donnelly makes Northern Ireland debut

Nottingham Forest youngster Aaron Donnelly has now made his debut for Northern Ireland.

The 21-year-old had previously represented his country at U16, U17 and U21 level before coming off the bench to appear in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Andorra.

Donnelly was called up by Michael O’Neill after an impressive 2023/24 campaign on loan at Dundee, where he made 21 appearances and provided three assists.

The central defender – who was previously sent off after just 37 minutes of a Northern Ireland U21 outing – also showcased his versatility in Scottish football by making a couple of appearances on the left of the backline.

Nuno Espirito Santo should keep an eye on the 21-year-old

Donnelly seems to be progressing well, and his efforts across the past 12 months deserve some acknowledgement from Nuno Espirito Santo.

We are not suggesting that the Portuguese tactician throws the Magherafelt-born prospect straight into the deep end in the Premier League, although it would be worth keeping an eye on him throughout pre-season to see what he can do back at the City Ground.

Interestingly, Nuno is on the lookout for a new central defender to replace Willy Boly in the long term – according to The Athletic – so there would appear to be a spot for Donnelly if he impresses.

Should the Irishman fail to stay in and around the first-team at the City Ground next season, another loan to a higher level, perhaps a club in the Championship, would be a wise move to aid his development.

Whatever happens, nobody can argue that Donnelly is not progressing well at Nottingham Forest.
