Singer who will 'always be an icon' dies as son pays tribute - 'Mom is gone'

Francoise Hardy’s inspiring work ethic saw her contribute creatively from the early 60s right up until the late 2010s.

French singer-songwriter Francoise Hardy has passed away aged 80, her son has confirmed in a short statement. Hardy was commended for releasing more than 30 albums across a strikingly impressive career that spanned five decades. The Parisian is said to have inspired the likes of Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger, and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished French musicians of all time. Her death has prompted a wave of emotional tributes from the music industry and beyond.

In a brief but devastating statement uploaded to Instagram, Hardy’s son and fellow musician Thomas Dutronc uploaded a picture of the pair from his childhood captioned “Maman est partie” – “Mom is gone”.

Having found immediate recording success in Paris back in 1962, Hardy embarked on a journey to London in 1964 and proceeded to record with a number of influential artists like Serge Gainsbourg and Catherine Lara, in what would become the formative years of an enduringly successful career.

Without reducing her impact down to the impression she left on men, it is often pointed out how many supposedly trailblazing male musical figures were said to be influenced by Hardy – with the likes of David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Morrissey all having been said to be fascinated with Hardy.

Bowie once spoke on French TV about being “passionately in love” with Hardy, while Bob Dylan is also said to have been particularly enamored with the French songstress, dedicating a poem to her on the album artwork of his 1964 release, Another Side of Bob Dylan.

Hardy was a master of several trades – branching out beyond music and finding success as an actress, model and, bizarrely, an astrologer.

The late artist had struggled publically with Malt lymphoma for several years, and publically advocated for assisted suicide in 2021 as she revealed the physical suffering she was enduring.

Tributes flood in for late ‘icon’ Hardy

In the hours since her passing was announced, countless fans and peers have come together on Twitter (X) to pay their respects to Hardy.

“R.I.P. Francoise Hardy, one of the coolest and most talented and beautiful people ever to live”, read one heartfelt tribute. “Listen to her music. Watch her movies. Your life will improve by magnitudes.”

Celebrating her long, eventful life, another fan wrote: “Francoise Hardy was just as beautiful and radiant in her later years as she always has been. It’s tragic when an icon dies, but it’s uplifting to remember that she lived such a long and fulfilling life”.

Another particularly poignant commemoration read: “RIP Francoise Hardy. It’s a woefully used word, but she was, and always will be, an icon”.

Hardy is survived by her ex-husband Jacques Dutronc, and their aforementioned son, Thomas.
