What Cristian Romero previously said about joining La Liga as Real Madrid show interest this summer

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero has previously spoken about a potential move to La Liga as interest emerges this summer.

The summer transfer window has now officially opened and Tottenham will be looking to make some changes to their squad.

Having now had a full year to work with his side, Ange Postecoglou will be all too aware of the changes he wants to make over the coming months.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has already seen considerable change over the last 12 months with Harry Kane‘s departure marking a fresh start for Spurs.

Following Kane and Hugo Lloris‘ exits, Heung-min Son was made the captain with Cristian Romero and James Maddison the vice captains.

However, a summer exit could now potentially be on the cards for Romero with one of the biggest clubs in the world showing an interest.

Cristian Romero is receiving big interest this summer

Romero has established himself as one of the top defenders in the Premier League after a really impressive 2023/24 campaign under Postecoglou.

The increased responsibility as the club’s vice-captain saw his disciplinary record drastically improve with his defensive displays remaining at a high level.

According to ESPN Argentina, Real Madrid are now showing their interest in the Tottenham defender this summer.

Unfortunately, interest from the likes of Madrid in Romero is not too difficult to believe for any Spurs fan who has watched Romero under the Australian.

However, Romero has previously seen interest come his way from La Liga giants Barcelona and he has commented on that before.

Going back three years, Romero did discuss interest coming from La Liga as he snubbed it to play in the Premier League with Tottenham.

Yes , I heard about Barcelona’s interest, but I chose Tottenham: I wanted to play in the Premier League and continue to grow in the best championship in the world,” he told the media.

Tottenham know Real Madrid’s power all too well

Tottenham will by now know just how powerful Real Madrid’s pull is when they come in for a player they like.

Gareth Bale and Luka Modric have both swiftly departed north London to join the Spanish giants and no one can blame them.

Although Romero may have previously said he wanted to play in the Premier League, Madrid have just won the league and the Champions League as they continue to strengthen through the addition of Kylian Mbappe.

What player would not want to play in that team?

The good news for Tottenham, though, is Romero has spoken incredibly positively about his time under Postecoglou recently.

And even if Romero is to suddenly push for a move to Madrid, he has three years left on his deal and Spurs would surely demand an incredible amount of money for their star defender.
