Chelsea should make £85m defender their number one priority, he’s allowed to leave this summer – opinion

Chelsea are needing to address their defence this summer after one of their top performers over the last few seasons has left the club.

Despite approaching the age of 40, there had been few better at the back in the Premier League than Thiago Silva, although the club are building to a future without him after he returned to Brazil.

They have already begun to address the void with the signing of Tosin Adarabioyo. The Blues beat a number of big sides to his signature, as he will join when the window officially opens on a free transfer.

It is fair to say that they will need to do more when it comes to bringing in options at the back, even if that is with an eye to the future rather than the present.

One young defender they are reportedly interested in signing is Leny Yoro. It was reported late last season that they had sent scouts to watch him in action for Lille.

Chelsea have to make Leny Yoro top target

It has been claimed in the past too that they see the youngster as the perfect player for their project, even if his reported transfer fee is set to be around £85m.

Lille president Olivier Letang has confirmed that Yoro is allowed to leave this summer, and this should set alarm bells ringing at Stamford Bridge.

With there being just a year left on his current contract too, there is a brilliant chance that they are able to negotiate the fee they need to pay down to a far more manageable amount.

They are not the only top side interested in the youngster, however the signing would be a real statement that they are ready to sign players who are ready to feature in the near future as well as years down the line at Stamford Bridge.
