Prince Harry turned down King Charles' generous 'offer' over 'security concerns'

It’s recently been reported that Prince Harry rejected an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace during a UK visit due to “security concerns.”

The month of May proved another whirlwind of events and appearances for Prince Harry, who was welcomed back into the outstretched arms of an adoring UK public during a packed visit on May 8th 2024. He was visiting London in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, a sporting event for wounded and sick servicemen to compete that he founded. The Duke of Sussex didn’t see his father King Charles during the visit, nor did he stay with the royals. Since the event, the reason has been brought to attention…

Prince Harry cited ‘security concerns’ for King Charles’ Buckingham Palace rejection

It turns out that King Charles requested Harry to stay in a room at Buckingham Palace during his Invictus Games London visit.

The Telegraph reports the 39-year-old royal turned his father’s offer down in response to “security concerns”. The publication notes that “he would have been staying in a visible location with public entrance and exit points and no police protection.”

Ultimately, he didn’t stay at the royal residence and must have stayed in a hotel or other property instead. This isn’t the first time Harry has done so as he has ‘nowhere left to go’. A couple of days later he reunited with his wife Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, in Nigeria for a three-day visit also in celebration of the Invictus Games’ anniversary.

Of course, Buckingham Palace itself is a heavily guarded cultural landmark, complete with CCTV, armed guards, fencing, security checkpoints, and more. All the same, Harry evidently felt he was at risk with less protection than was needed to accept the offer without having doubts.

Prince Harry was ‘fearing’ for his family’s life before leaving UK

Harry and Meghan relocated to her native California in June 2020 to raise their first child Archie, and their second, Lilibet, was born in the US state the following year.

In January 2023, Harry sat down for an interview with ITV to discuss his memoir Spare, published the same month. During the conversation, he said: “I fled my home country with my wife and my son, fearing for our lives.”

With this in mind, it’s not so farfetched that he would be plagued by security concerns in the wake of being offered to stay at Buckingham Palace. It’s consistent with the statement he made last year.

He was defensive about the decision to be unfiltered about his personal life in the memoir, telling the interviewer: “38 years, 38 years of having my story told by so many different people with intentional spin and distortion felt like a good time to own my story and be able to tell it for myself.”
