Newcastle have just been offered the chance to sign £68m Bayern Munich star - journalist

Newcastle United are still in the market for a centre-back, despite announcing the arrival of Lloyd Kelly.

The 25-year-old was unveiled as a Newcastle United player on Thursday, with Eddie Howe delighted to welcome Kelly to the club.

But he is a left-footed player, and will operate as a left-sided centre-back or as a left-back.

The Magpies would also like to sign a right-sided centre-back, with Toon officials well aware that they will eventually need to replace Fabian Schar, who turns 33-years-old at the end of this year.

Newcastle thought they had found the solution in Tosin Adarabioyo, and were confident that he was going to arrive on a free transfer. However, he opted to sign for Chelsea instead, in what was a blow to the Magpies’ summer transfer plans.

That is according to HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that Newcastle United, alongside Liverpool and Arsenal, have been made aware that they can sign Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich.

“Newcastle are one of a handful of clubs who have been offered De Ligt by intermediaries,” he said.

“Intermediaries are working on De Ligt and he is keen to move to England, that is true.

“Newcastle are one of a handful of clubs in the Premier League that could put a deal together, but it remains to be seen if they would be interested.

“De Ligt would be a very expensive signing for any club, given the fact he moved for £68million in 2022.”

De Ligt would be a blockbuster signing for Newcastle

While Newcastle have been offered De Ligt, that does not necessarily mean they are interested.

If money was not a problem then he would be a perfect signing. He is a commanding presence and already has a lot of top level experience, despite only being 24-years-old.

If he did arrive, it would eventually lead to a Dutch connection at the back, with De Ligt partnering Sven Botman, who is currently out of action to due a serious knee injury.

De Ligt, who is set to compete at Euro 2024 for Netherlands, would be an outrageous defensive signing on the back of missing out on Tosin. However, it simply is not going to happen.

Finances will be all wrong for Newcastle

When De Ligt joined Bayern Munich in 2022, he cost them £68million and signed a five-year deal. He has a contract at the Allianz Arena that runs until 2027, meaning it will be very costly deal for anyone to do.

On top of that, his wages will be massive too. According to Salary Sport, he earns more than £250,000-a-week at Bayern. That is more than anyone earns on Tyneside, and is way more than what the Magpies would be willing to pay.

The finances are all wrong, which is why it is a waste of time offering him to Newcastle United.
