£20m Newcastle player is on more money than people realise, he'll be difficult to sell - journalist

It is not going to be easy for Newcastle United to raise funds this month.

The Magpies are reportedly one of six Premier League clubs that are under pressure to sell before June 30th due to PSR, which could lead to a busy end to the month on Tyneside.

Newcastle United have plenty of candidates to potentially move on and get decent money for, but actually getting them out the door is easier said than done.

Whether it is wages, contract length or other clubs’ lack of desire to spend, it is really difficult to predict who Toon officials could cash in on over the next couple of weeks.

Newcastle may struggle to cash in on Callum Wilson

Callum Wilson is one contender to depart, with the 32-year-old viewed as likely to leave St James’ Park this summer. It has even been reported that he is open to starting a new challenge away from Tyneside.

However, HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey has explained to Geordie Boot Boys why it might be difficult for the Magpies to part ways with the £20million man.

“Callum Wilson is not an easy player to move on because of his wages,” he said.

“Newcastle know they might have to swallow some of them to let him go, because he earns more than a lot of people realise.

“Kieran Trippier is one to keep an eye on, as he only has one year left on his contract.

“I still think Almiron will leave – whether a deal happens in June remains to be seen, but I think Newcastle would like that to be the case.”

Bailey suggests possible Callum Wilson replacement for Newcastle

If Newcastle are able to move Wilson on then they will need to find a replacement.

Eddie Howe needs a striker that he can rely on to provide cover for Alexander Isak, who was one of the Magpies’ best players during the 2023/24 campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with coming in, but Bailey has suggested that Tammy Abraham is a player who Newcastle United should consider.

“If Wilson goes as expected, Tammy Abraham is someone who makes sense. Roma are going to take less than £30million for him.

“He ticks a lot of boxes. There are plenty of Premier League clubs that are looking at him now. He’s half the price of Ivan Toney and Benjamin Sesko, for instance.”

Abraham certainly does tick a lot of boxes, and could be a great addition to Eddie Howe’s squad. Newcastle have been made aware of his availability, and his potential price tag has to be very appealing.

Money will be the decisive factor, with Howe previously warning that a new striker will not come cheap if Wilson departs.

For now, the biggest difficulty could be just getting Wilson to depart in the first place.
