Aston Villa reach agreement to sign Ian Maatsen who is set to join for a big fee

Aston Villa are set to complete the signing of Ian Maatsen after a bid was accepted by Chelsea for the full-back.

Throughout June, most of Villa’s rumours have been surrounding potential departures.

Douglas Luiz has been strongly linked to Juventus while Jhon Duran is rumoured to be in talks with Chelsea.

While the Birmingham outfit has been linked to players such as Ross Barkley, nothing has been made official yet.

However, it now seems that Unai Emery will have a star through the door in the coming weeks after a fee was agreed between Chelsea and Villa for left-back Maatsen.

Maatsen has been linked with Villa throughout the transfer window. The full-back area is one of the club’s weakest points which needed to be resolved in preparation for their Champions League campaign.

However, according to The Athletic, Emery’s side are now on the verge of an expensive solution to their issue.

The report states that Villa have agreed a fee with Chelsea for Maatsen. The left-back signed for the London club in 2018 and has been out on loan to multiple clubs, most recently, Borussia Dortmund.

In Germany, Maatsen impressed and was named in the Champions League Team of the Tournament as they reached the final.

Dortmund did have the option to buy the left-back for £35 million, however, this has now expired.

As a result, Villa have swooped in for a fee believed to be just over £35 million. If all goes through, the 22-year-old is set to sign a six-year deal at the club and would become Villa’s second most expensive player ever.

If Villa can get the deal over the line, the transfer could be one of the signings of the summer in the Premier League.

The left-back was outstanding for Borussia Dortmund and left a lasting impression despite only joining the club in January 2024.

The fact that he is also only 22 years old means that the club could have their left side protected for the next 10 years.

If Maatsen continues down his current path, he will only improve and could easily become the best full-back in the division.

Monchi and Emery have now taken the first step to resolving the defensive issues that plagued the club in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign. Hopefully, over the coming months, more players will be added to Villa’s first-team squad.
