Report: Ligue 1 side want Leeds United player on a free transfer, but English club in talks

Leeds United announced a number of players will be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer with their contracts coming to an end, including the likes of Luke Ayling and Robin Koch.

Both Ayling and Koch see their deals expire at the end of the month, but have already secured permanent exits to Middlesbrough and Frankfurt on free transfers while others will be departing Leeds on a free.

Charlie Allen, Lew Bate, Dani van den Heuvel and others players are leaving the club for nothing, as well as winger Ian Poveda. The Colombia international has been on the books at Leeds since January 2020.

The wide man has only played 30 times for Leeds since that move from Man City, instead spending time out on loan at Blackburn, Blackpool and then during the second half of the season, Sheffield Wednesday.

Ligue 1 club now want to sign Leeds United man Poveda

Poveda is not short of suitors, with West Brom, Cardiff City and Luton Town said to be interested in keeping Poveda in the Championship. Burnley have also been linked with the former Man City star.

But now, a report from The Sheffield Star delivers an update regarding Poveda. They say that Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks over a permanent deal for the wide man this summer.

The report also states that Wednesday have new competition from an unnamed club in France’s top tier. It is unclear which club it could be, but the chance to play in Ligue 1 will surely appeal to the attacker.

Poveda has huge decision to make with career on the line

No longer a spring chicken but with an international career on the line, Poveda needs to pick the club that allows him to play regularly but at a good enough level to keep him in the thinking with Colombia.

At Sheffield Wednesday, he is well-liked and Rohl is a fan. But the chance to go to a bigger Championship club like West Brom, Luton or Burnley would improve his Colombia chances, if of course he starts.

He worked with Carlos Corberan at Leeds and with The Baggies losing Michael Johnston, Poveda could be the ideal signing for West Brom and vice versa. But he can get assurances from France, so be it.
