Former court officer ‘mishandled’ $1.5M in funds, authorities say

A former court officer responsible for collecting money related to civil court orders misappropriated $1.5 million in funds, authorities said.

In September 2023, the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office about the alleged missing funds and an investigation was launched, the office said in a release.

The months-long investigation revealed that beginning in 2014, Bruce Piekarsky, 69, of Davie, Florida, “mishandled” $1.5 million in funds that he was supposed to collect, officials said.

Piekarsky was arrested Thursday in Paramus and charged with second-degree theft, second-degree misapplication of entrusted property and third-degree tampering with public records, investigators said.

No further information was released Thursday.

Piekarsky was being held in the Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance, the office said.
