Local media rate Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso performances for Tottenham stars at Copa America

Tottenham are well-represented at tournaments this summer, with Copa America 2024 the latest to feature Spurs stars.

Argentina kickstarted the competition, which is being hosted in the USA, by facing off with Canada in a Group A encounter.

The reigning World Champions were held to a draw by half-time, but the second half saw them find the quality they needed.

Manchester City star Julian Alvarez scored the opener just after the break, while a late finish from Lautaro Martinez doubled their tally.

It puts Argentina in a strong position to start with, as Tottenham representatives Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso featured.

The duo, coming off the back of mixed fortunes at Hotspur Way this season, are looking to continue their fine international form and bring back yet more silverware.

Argentina v Canada player ratings

With Argentina recording an opening game victory, there’s plenty of hope that they can land a place in the quarter-finals, with two group-stage matches left to come.

Romero and Lo Celso will both look to maintain their place in the team throughout the tournament, following their first win.

The duo were rated by the outlet TYC Sports, with one star given the player of the match for his display.

Starting with Lo Celso, the midfielder struggled for minutes under Ange Postecoglou but continues to be a key player for his nation.

The playmaker was given a six out of ten for his display from the bench, with the description reading: “It took him a few minutes to get into a rhythm. He led well on Lautaro’s [Martinez] goal.”

As for Romero, the centre-back has been an important player at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the past season.

Those performances have translated well on the international stage, with yet another player of the match display.

The Tottenham star was given an eight out of ten for his performance, with the rating saying: “Every time he anticipated he lifted the stadium. He had a couple of providential saves.”

It marks an ideal night for the Spurs duo, who will turn their attention to their group match against Chile next Wednesday.

Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero transfer chances

The Copa America could have a huge impact on the summer business that Tottenham can conduct in the transfer market.

Lo Celso is likely to leave Spurs as links continue over a possible transfer, with just one year remaining on his current deal.

With the current Tottenham boss unlikely to use the 28-year-old, a move this summer may be one that suits all parties.

The Copa America offers a chance to gain more potential suitors, displaying exactly what the midfielder is capable of.

As for Romero, he has also been linked with a transfer away from Tottenham, following an impressive campaign.

Real Madrid have been the side rumoured with interest, though it remains to be seen whether that will materialise in a move.

Should that happen, another impressive tournament showing could only strengthen Spurs and any transfer demands.
