'Such a problem': Sheffield Wednesday's Danny Rohl explains what the main 'issue' for England is at Euro 2024

Danny Rohl’s time as an ITV pundit came to an end during Portugal’s 3-0 win over Turkey yesterday.

The Sheffield Wednesday coach has spent the last week in Germany and has covered five games alongside the likes of Gary Neville, Ian Wright and Karen Carney.

While the German has returned to Yorkshire ahead of England’s final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday, he has offered his verdict on the main ‘problem’ with the national team.

England kicked off their Euro campaign with a narrow win over Serbia last week, but put on a concerning second half performance.

They then continued that poor display into the clash with Denmark days later, in which they held onto a 1-1 draw.

This means the Three Lions’ place in the knockout stages isn’t guaranteed and they could face an embarrassing exit if they lose to Slovenia.

Danny Rohl admits England are lacking intensity

Gareth Southgate’s side are massively underperforming, and Rohl has now had his say on why that could be.

Speaking on ITV yesterday, the Owls coach said: “The biggest question for me is, is this really the system or the players? Or is there something else behind it? He spoke yesterday about the players were not fresh enough for the pressing or the intensity.

“Yeah, it’s such a problem. Then you can change the shape or the system, but you will not change the intensity just with the shape. I saw yesterday all the data after they took the lead, all the players are just 20 metres in front of their own goal. I think maybe this is the issue.”

Where does the issue lie with Gareth Southgate’s squad?

England have some of the best players in world football in the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Phil Foden, however it is only the former that has managed to impress at all so far this summer.

While playing Foden out wide and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the middle doesn’t seem to be working, that surely can’t be the sole reason for such a dismal excuse for ‘pressing’, their lack of movement and poor passing.

Choosing to only call up one injured left-back is certainly a huge issue, while giving Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer zero minutes in two matches is another.

It seems to be a mix of a number of problems that is causing England’s downfall, but Southgate is now the only man that can fix it and he needs to do it fast.
