Jersey Shore amusement pier evacuated as police search for man with gun

A Jersey Shore amusement pier was briefly evacuated Saturday evening due to a police investigation reportedly related to a person with a gun.

Surfside Pier in North Wildwood, part of the Morey’s Piers and Amusement Parks chain, was shut down temporarily but reopened, according to local police.

North Wildwood police did not return a request for comment Sunday, but6ABC Philadelphia reported the evacuation was due to a man brandishing a gun before being taken into custody.

It was unclear if the man was charged with any crimes. No one was injured, police told the television station.

Photos shared online show police officers walking around the pier during the investigation.

“The issue was resolved, and Surfside Pier was quickly reopened with the full support of the police,” Morey’s Piers said in a statement. “Our guests continued to enjoy the pier the rest of the evening.”

Will Morey, the Cape May County commissioner who owns the amusement park franchise, told NJ Advance Media the park was shut down for 45 minutes to an hour as a precaution by police. Officers were investigating an area of the beach nearby.

About 750 people were inside the park at the time, Morey said.

The pier is maybe best known for being home to The Great Nor’Easter Roller Coaster. A beachfront water park is also at the pier’s end.
