Report: World Cup winner Lopetegui wanted at Wolves now has agreement to leave his club

A player Wolves reportedly showed interest around the time of the last World Cup is set to leave his club.

It’s been a good start to the summer for Wolves after a disappointing end to the 2023/24 season.

Rodrigo Gomes signed from Braga, following Tommy Doyle who made his loan move from Manchester City permanent.

Pedro Lima is to join from Sport Recife on July 1 after an agreement was reached last week.

Fans have appreciated the way the club have done things so far in the transfer market. And the hope is that more new faces will be coming in.

Potentially, Wolves may have a need to move for a left-back if one of Rayan Ait-Nouri or Hugo Bueno leaves. Both have been linked with exits, and the club may seek a replacement if one goes.

Perhaps the club may turn to a former target if that does happen.

It has been reported by Estadio Deportivo that Marco Acuna is to leave Sevilla this summer.

Sevilla are moving on a number of their older players, with Ivan Rakitic, Fernando Reges, Erik Lamela and Óliver Torres all moving on too.

Acuna, 32, has been with Sevilla for four years.

He does actually have one year left on his contract. But it has been decided that he will be moving on for a low fee. A unanimous decision has been made by all parties. It is claimed Acuna had actuall wanted to leave Sevilla last summer and in the winter, but the club wouldn’t let him depart.

It is thought Sevilla would be happy to let Acuna go for around £1.7-£2.5 million.

Some Wolves fans will remember that Acuna was linked with a move to Molineux shortly after Julen Lopetegui took over, just before the 2022 World Cup.

Lopetegui had previously worked with Acuna at Sevilla and knew of the players’ qualities.

In the end, nothing materliased, Acuna won the World Cup with Argentina, impressing in Qatar, and then stayed put at Sevilla.

Acuna could be another Fernando Marcal for Wolves

It is probably unlikely, but perhaps Wolves may consider reigniting their interest in Acuna if one of Bueno or Ait-Nouri goes. It would be good to have an older, more experienced option to complement a younger one.

Wolves have previously had an older left-back option in Fernando Marcal, who did a decent job when called uponat Molineux.

The Brazilian spent two seasons at the club, making 32 appearances.

Acuna is obviously very experienced at the age of 32, and has international pedigree, having accrued 58 caps.

The one drawback with him though would be that his injury record last season wasn’t the best. He was limited to 26 appearances across all competitions. But in the three seasons before that he didn’t have any issues.

Another experienced head in the dressing room could be good for Wolves, and he would certainly not break the bank.
