Tottenham want to swap Joe Rodon for ‘excellent’ £30m midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a positive start to the summer transfer window in terms of outgoings.

The club has already offloaded the likes of Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga, as well as Tanguy Ndombele.

But there is still plenty of work to be done as Ange Postecoglou is reportedly happy to offload 15 players this summer.

Among those expected to head out the door is Joe Rodon, who is set to return from a successful loan spell at Leeds United.

The Welshman was expected to secure a move to Elland Road after thriving under Daniel Farke last term. But after the Whites missed out on promotion to the Premier League, the move is in serious doubt.

And according to The Sun, Tottenham are looking to use Rodon in a deal to land a current Southampton star after the Saints denied Leeds a return to England’s top flight.

Tottenham want to swap Rodon for Southampton star

The newspaper [23/06, page 55] claims that Spurs are set to attempt to land Carlos Alcaraz by including Rodon in the deal.

Rodon is rated at around £10 million while it is believed the Saints value Alcaraz at roughly £30 million, which would leave the two clubs with some work to do.

Alcaraz spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus after not wanting to play in the Championship.

The midfielder registered one assist in 10 Serie A appearances for the Italian giants after having a hand in seven goals for the Saints beforehand.

Alcaraz’s Premier League spell should encourage Spurs fans

This is certainly a surprising link from Tottenham’s point of view as Postecoglou searches for midfield reinforcements.

But offloading Rodon and landing a talented young midfielder in Alcaraz could be an astute move from Spurs.

The 21-year-old endured a frustrating spell at Juve last term but he impressed in the Premier League during the 2022/23 campaign.

The Argentine had a hand in six goals in 18 appearances for Southampton in the top flight and many Spurs fans will remember his display at the Emirates Stadium that season.

His goal and assist earned his side a point against Arsenal while landing a huge dent in their title hopes, with Alan Shearer labelling his performance as ‘excellent‘.
