Report: Mikel Arteta has personally phoned 'world class' player to try and get him to sign for Arsenal

Arsenal are hoping to land the signature of a ‘world class’ player this summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

The Gunners will be eager to go one better next term and finally pip Manchester City to the Premier League title after finishing two points short last term.

Sporting director Edu will be hard at work identifying a number of targets to strengthen Arteta’s ranks and with that said, it seems one La Liga star could be nearing a move to North London.

Mikel Arteta personally phoned Mikel Merino

According to a report from Sport, Mikel Arteta has personally phoned Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, who has been labelled as ‘world class’ by teammate Kieran Tierney.

The Arsenal boss is desperate to sign the Spain international this summer and has already been in direct contact with Merino to discuss the big plans he has for him at the Emirates Stadium.

It’s thought that Merino is keen on a return to the Premier League having had a year on loan at Newcastle United during the 2017/18 campaign.

The 28-year-old has complete confidence in Arteta and could turn down interest from Barcelona to make the switch to North London.

Mikel Merino could be available for £21m

Merino isn’t expected to renew his deal at Real Sociedad and is therefore set to leave for a discounted price this summer, with his contract due to expire next year.

The LaLiga outfit are demanding £21m for his signature, which is certainly feasible for The Gunners as they look to bolster their midfield ranks.

Merino, who can operate as a number six or as an eight, could replace Thomas Partey who has been heavily mooted with a departure.

Perhaps Declan Rice will be moved back into the defensive role, with Merino given licence to push on into attacking areas.
