Report: Chelsea were actually interested in signing £40m PL striker, they now have other targets

Chelsea are not going to deviate away from their transfer strategy for one striker it seems.

Since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea have mostly targeted young players.

For example, they recently agreed a deal with Palmeiras to sign Estevao Willian, who is still just 17 years old.

The Blues have signed 26-year-old Tosin Adarabioyo this summer, while Robert Sanchez, also 26, was brought in last August.

So Chelsea are not totally against recruiting someone who is in their mid-20s. But their preference of late has been players in their early 20s and teens.

Chelsea want young striker

With Nicolas Jackson playing almost 50 games last season, Chelsea are trying to sign a new No.9.

However, their transfer policy means one Premier League centre-forward is unlikely to join them this summer.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have shown tentative interest in Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but the club are now looking at younger options.

He could have cost them £40m, with a report from Sky Sports suggesting that that is how much money the Toffees want for the 27-year-old.

Calvert-Lewin scored seven goals in 32 league appearances for Everton last season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was not a bad option for Chelsea

All things considered, Calvert-Lewin could have been a smart signing for Chelsea this transfer window.

His injury record is a bit of a concern, though he did look much fitter last season and was able to play in the majority of Everton’s Premier League fixtures.

Calvert-Lewin has reached double figures in the division before and would not have cost too much at £40m.

At 27, the Everton man would not make Jackson redundant either. Signing a striker around the Senegal international’s age would obviously be a potential barrier to him and the amount of game time he gets in the future.

There are certainly worse strikers Chelsea can sign this summer.
