Monchi considering ‘new attack’ on £68m Aston Villa target who has already played in the Midlands

Aston Villa have not given up their pursuit of one transfer target who could make a sensational return to the Midlands this summer.

Monchi has completed his goal of easing Aston Villa’s PSR concerns before June 30th, as the Midlands club now aims to turn their attention to incomings.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein confirmed that Villa have ‘surpassed their requirement’ to offload players, with the focus now on improving the squad.

Unai Emery could make a significant upgrade to his side ahead of the 2024/25 Champions League campaign if the Villans are to pull off one blockbuster signing.

Aston Villa have not given up on transfer target Pedro Goncalves

Back in May, Aston Villa were said to have interest in Sporting CP star Pedro Goncalves, who has a release clause of €80m (£68m).

Rumours regarding the Midlands club’s admiration for the forward have not died down, with Portuguese outlet A Bola now reporting Villa’s goal to move for the 25-year-old.

The report claims that Villa are ‘considering a new attack’ on Goncalves, known as Pote, speculating that the Premier League side ‘could move forward with a proposal’.

As expected, A Bola stressed the fact that Sporting Lisbon will not part ways with one of their ‘untouchables’ for anything less than his release clause, as other players generate interest.

Bayer Leverkusen had a bid of €30m rejected for Goncalves last summer, with Villa’s task clear if they really want to lure the versatile attacker to Villa Park.

The Portuguese sensation could significantly bolster Emery’s options going forward, in what could present the Sporting star with a return to the Midlands.

Goncalves could make a shock return to the Midlands

Before becoming an established player in Portugal, Goncalves played for Wolves’ academy, where he stayed for two years before returning to his homeland.

The 25-year-old never truly settled in Wolverhampton, where he made 38 appearances for the U21 side, contributing to 13 goals as well as making one senior appearance in the Carabao Cup.

Villa’s Midlands rivals will be kicking themselves for not paying more attention to Goncalves, who has since exploded onto the scene in Liga Portugal, contributing to 127 goals in 178 appearances for Sporting CP.

Last season, the Villa target recorded 35 goal contributions, scoring 18 times and recording 17 assists to showcase his strengths in the final third.

It would be a sensational coup for Monchi to secure Goncalves’ signature, in what would hand the Sporting ace a second chance at adapting to life in England.
