Unai Emery can land ‘exceptional’ Ollie Watkins partner as Aston Villa plot £27m transfer swoop

Aston Villa could sign a perfect partner for Ollie Watkins this summer if Monchi can beat Chelsea to his signature.

Unai Emery and Monchi are on the prowl for new signings this summer now that Aston Villa’s PSR woes have been eased.

The Villans are set to part ways with Douglas Luiz and Omari Kellyman, with Tim Iroegbunam having already left to join Everton.

Several possible targets have already been speculated, with one posing the opportunity for Emery to significantly bolster his front line ahead of next season.

Aston Villa are interested in TSG Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier

Aston Villa are in the race to sign Maximilian Beier, with Chelsea also credited with having interest in the 21-year-old.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg relayed that the Villans have ‘concrete interest’ in the striker and have ‘gathered information’ about his availability this summer.

Sporting a release clause of just €30m (£27m) at Hoffenheim, Monchi must present an exciting project to the German in order to potentially lure him to Villa Park.

Plettenberg understands that Beier won’t make a decision on his future until after his Euro 2024 journey concludes with Germany, with Villa thought to be tracking his movements.

Beier could thrive with Ollie Watkins at Villa

Having netted 16 Bundesliga goals in his first full season in the German top flight, Beier has captured the attention of many.

The 21-year-old, who was described as ‘exceptional’ by U23 scout Antonio Mango, could be the perfect coup for Villa and in particular, Ollie Watkins.

In Germany, Beier is utilised in a front three that rotates between himself, Ihlas Bebou and Andrej Kramaric alternating positions in a 3-4-2-1 and 3-4-1-2 formation.

Capable of playing as both the leading number nine and in behind the striker, the German international could be a strong partner for Watkins, based on how the Villans thrived last term.

Whether it was Youri Tielemans or Moussa Diaby, Emery enjoyed deploying Villa’s talisman with close support behind, occupying a free-roaming role in front of the midfield.

Having played such role in the Bundesliga, Beier could offer a similar skill set to Emery’s Villa side, only with many more goals than what is currently on show.

With Chelsea also keen on adding the highly-rated 21-year-old to their ranks, only time will tell if Monchi can act fast to secure a deal for the Hoffenheim superstar.
