Tottenham Hotspur now set to appoint English coach who called Ange Postecoglou 'amazing'

Tottenham Hotspur will be focused on making new signings this summer but Ange Postecoglou has also been handed a coaching conundrum in recent weeks.

Europa League action is returning to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season after a fifth-place finish in Ange Postecoglou’s first season at the club.

The Tottenham boss will want improvements next season though and that means signings will be a major focus.

Timo Werner and Lucas Bergvall are already joining this summer but Tottenham will certainly need more new recruits in the coming months.

It isn’t all about players though and Postecoglou has been forced to consider coaching additions this summer.

Assistant coach Chris Davies has left the club, becoming the new manager of League One side Birmingham City.

Postecoglou has praised Davies for his work at Tottenham but has to find a replacement ahead of pre-season starting – and appears to have found two additions.

Nick Montgomery heading for Tottenham Hotspur

FTBL in Australia now claim that Nick Montgomery is set to join Tottenham.

It’s stated that Montgomery has been ‘inundated’ with coaching offers in Asia having recently left his post as Hibernian boss.

However, Montgomery is set to accept the chance to join Postecoglou’s coaching staff and effectively replace Davies.

Montgomery may not be alone though as the report claims that his former Hibs assistant Sergio Raimundo is also expected to join Tottenham.

Montgomery is a former Premier League midfielder from his playing days having turned out for Sheffield United in the top flight.

A midfielder back then, Montgomery headed to Australia with Central Coast Mariners in 2012 and has been cemented in football Down Under ever since.

Montgomery finished his playing career with Wollongong Wolves before returning to Central Coast Mariners as a coach.

The 42-year-old won the A-League title in 2023 and was then plucked by Hibernian in September, but lasted just 37 games in charge of the club.

12 wins, 12 draws and 13 defeats saw Montgomery lose his job with Raimundo following him out of Easter Road.

Raimundo is a former Benfica youth coach who worked with Montgomery in Australia and Scotland and now looks set to join the Spurs staff too.

Montgomery past comments on Ange Postecoglou

The obvious connection here is that Montgomery has learned his craft in Australia, where Postecoglou is something of a hero.

After landing the Hibernian job, Montgomery immediate paid tribute to Postecoglou and his impact on the game in Australia.

Montgomery told Sky Sports that Postecoglou has been simply ‘amazing’ and the pair actually spoke after Montgomery won the A-League title.

The Leeds-born coach added that Postecoglou is a real inspiration and admires him enormously.

“Ange has been amazing,” said Montgomery. “Everybody doubted him when he went to Celtic and you can see what he did there, he’s already doing that at Tottenham, what he did in Japan. I know Ange, he was one of the first to congratulate me after we won the competition because he knows winning the A-League is not easy, especially winning it with no marquee players, with the smallest budget and the youngest team, it’s something I’m really proud of and I don’t think anybody has done that before.”

“He’s an inspiration, he’s an inspiration for any coach around the world – not just Australian, but I think the fact he is Australian, and when you see his story of how he’s done it, yeah, I’ve got so much time and admiration for him,” he added.

It now looks like Montgomery will be joining Tottenham to work alongside Postecoglou with that admiration set to turn into a working relationship on a daily basis.
