'Interesting...': Alan Nixon suggests why Josh Windass may leave Sheffield Wednesday for Birmingham City

Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass looks set to be on the move this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday star Josh Windass sees his contract in S6 expire at the end of June, and he looks set to become a free agent on July 1st.

Reports say that Windass is looking increasingly likely to move on this summer after four years as a permanent player at Hillsborough.

The 30-year-old has scored the penultimate goals in both of Sheffield Wednesday’s last two seasons; the winning goal in the League One play-off final in 2023, then scoring in each of the Owls’ last three games of the 2023/24 campaign.

Several teams have been mentioned alongside Windass ahead of his contract expiring; Coventry City and Hull City are thought to be the front-runners, whilst Derby County, Stoke City, and West Brom have also been mentioned.

Birmingham City have also been credited with an ambitious interest in the Englishman, and Blues are said to have retained an interest ahead of July.

Alan Nixon on why Josh Windass might move to Birmingham City

It’s reported that Birmingham City made an ambitious move to sign Windass recently, ahead of their 2023/24 campaign in League One.

Blues are backed to spend well this summer with reports of owner Tom Wagner giving new manager Chris Davies a £20million transfer budget.

Posting on X, journalist Alan Nixon has now given his verdict on Windass’ future. Nixon has suggested that Windass might opt for a move to Birmingham City if he favours ‘finance’.

Nixon also adds that Windass might fancy a move to Birmingham City’s neighbours West Brom ‘if it’s about football’.

Would Josh Windass leave Sheffield Wednesday for Birmingham City

Windass showed his Championship quality in the final few games of last season, showcasing his goal-scoring nouse and his ability to crop up with important goals.

He’s now at a crossroads with this next move perhaps being one of the final moves of his career, so he’ll take the time to weigh up his next move.

Birmingham City may yet be an attractive destination for him with Blues likely to spend big this summer, meaning a potentially big pay check for Windass.

But he has enough options in the Championship and a move to West Brom could yet see Windass play in the Premier League for the first time in his career, should the Baggies achieve promotion next season.

So a move to Birmingham City may be unlikely for Windass who’ll surely want to continue showing his class in the second tier, after a promising end to the season with Sheffield Wednesday.
