'Late hijack': Journalist claims one club actually tried to steal Rodrigo Gomes from under Wolves' noses

It has been claimed that one club actually tried to hijack Wolves’ recent move for Rodrigo Gomes.

Rodrigo became Wanderers’ second addition of the summer, following Tommy Doyle turning his loan move permanent.

An agreement was then reached to sign Pedro Lima.

These players will make their moves official next week, and fans are hoping that plenty more new faces will walk through the door.

Rodrigo is certainly an exciting addition.

Last season, he thrived on loan at Portuguese outfit Estoril, playing mainly as a right wing-back. He scored nine goals and made eight assists in 36 appearances, and was one of the most exciting young players of the campaign.

Wolves did well to get him, and journalist Ben Jacobs has made a rather interesting claim about the 20-year-old.

By many accounts, Wolves have signed a very exciting young player.

The starlet has already been branded a ‘perfect’ signing by Gary O’Neil, and fans cannot wait to see him in action.

It is expected that he will play mainly in the wide areas, although he can actually operate centrally as well.

Prior to his move to Molineux, there were reports that Atletico Madrid had a strong interest in Rodrigo.

But there was also some late interest from another club, who actually attempted to scupper the deal that was taking him to Wolves. That club, was Italian giants AS Roma.

Journalist Ben Jacobs said on The Wolfpack podcast: “Wolves did really well here, because there was heavy competition. Atletico Madrid and, I’m told, a late hijack move from Roma as well.

“But the player wanted Wolves and the opportunity to play in the Premier League.”

Jacobs, having seen Rodrigo in action for the Portugal U21s, adds that Rodrigo has good versatility and is defensively quite good. He is also ‘really, really fast’ with ‘lightning pace’.

A coup for Wolves

It sounds very much as though Wolves have done quite well to sign Rodrigo.

Clearly, the player was fully set on completing a move to Molineux, than Roma’s late hijack attempt wasn’t an issue for Wolves.

Jacobs paints a fairly exciting picture of Rodrigo having seen him a few times.

By the sounds of it, he is a bit raw at times in terms of his end product. But the youngster’s pace and dribbling sound like two very good traits, and he also has defensive understanding and tactical discipline.

Hopefully, he can hit the ground running as quickly as possible – the fact he’s been signed nice and early is bound to help with the transition period.
