Uruguay national media deliver verdict on Darwin Nunez after 5-0 win at Copa America last night

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez started for Uruguay in their 5-0 demolition of Bolivia at the Copa America.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won each of their first two games in the competition. They are on top of their group now and are almost certain to finish there.

Argentina and Brazil are the usual favourites to win the Copa America every time, but Uruguay cannot be underestimated, especially with Bielsa at the helm.

To add that, Nunez has been on fire in the colours of the national team, and he was involved in a lot of things against Bolivia on Thursday night as well.

However, like he often does, he did miss a few big chances.

What Uruguay’s media are saying about Darwin Nunez’s performance vs Bolivia

Nunez is arguably the most-criticised player at Liverpool.

The Uruguay international, on his day, can be one of the best strikers in Europe. He is a nightmare to play against and never gives a defender an easy game.

However, Nunez can also be extremely frustrating in front of goal. Even though he scored 11 goals in the Premier League in the 2023/24 season, all the talk was about the 27 big chances he missed.

Nunez is away from all the noise in England now, and he is starring for Uruguay. Against Bolivia in a stunning 5-0 win, he found the net. He has now scored in seven consecutive appearances for his country, which is a near-100-year record.

However, Nunez also missed two big chances and hit the woodwork once. He could’ve and probably should’ve scored a hat-trick last night.

That hasn’t stopped his country’s media from raving about him.

La Diaria Deporte hailed Nunez by writing: “Always a scorer. He is famous because he put the ball it in the back of the net. He missed one chance, on the second he barely missed, the third was pin and green, to collect.

“Furthermore, if he doesn’t score them, he generates them, and if he doesn’t score them or generate them, he runs at all the defenders to not let them play in peace.”

El Observador wrote: “Another player who performed tremendously. He scored in his seventh consecutive game and even missed some more situations.

“However, he always tried and always complicated things for the defenders.”

What should Liverpool do with Nunez this summer?

Nunez came under enormous criticism in the 2023/24 season, especially towards the end.

Jurgen Klopp only gave him one start in Liverpool’s last six games in the Premier League. That seemingly annoyed the Uruguayan, so much so that he deleted all the Liverpool-related pictures on Instagram.

That led to rumours that Nunez could leave Liverpool, but we think the Reds should put their complete faith in the talented striker.

Yes, Nunez misses chances and that can be extremely frustrating, but he is just so difficult to play against. That forces the opposition defenders to keep a closer eye on him, which could open up space for others in attack.

As La Diaria rightly put it, Nunez will either score or assist, but if he can’t do either, he’ll still cause defenders all sorts of problems.

That’s why Liverpool should keep him next season.
