'Back...': Sheffield Wednesday's Bambo Diaby shares message as Owls players return for pre-season training

Sheffield Wednesday players returned for pre-season training on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has made significant progress in the transfer window already, including the defensive signings of Max Lowe and Yan Valery, the latter of which he coached during his stint as assistant coach at Southampton.

They are also set to sign midfielder Svante Ingelsson, who will likely partner up with Barry Bannan in midfield for the Owls.

These signings have been worked on despite Rohl not being in the country as he contributed to ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage, however the German is now back in S6 as he prepares for the new Championship season.

Options in centre-back still look light ahead of the new season at Hillsborough, however they will be boosted with the fitness of one of their starting defenders.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Bambo Diaby shares fitness update

Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Bambo Diaby has shared a post via Instagram with the caption ‘back to home work’, whilst kitted out in all Wednesday training gear.

The Owls defender had no significant injuries last season, however did sustain a face injury in their 3-1 win away at Blackburn Rovers.

Diaby was in-and-out of the squad for Wednesday last season, having started 26 games.

However, the back end of the season saw the Spaniard get less game time, tallying just five starts in his final 13 appearances in the 2023/24 season.

On Friday, Rohl greeted the Sheffield Wednesday first-team players upon their return to Middlewood.

Keeping Bambo Diaby fit will be crucial for Sheffield Wednesday

Options at centre-back are very threadbare, particularly with the uncertainty over the future of Di’Shon Bernard, whose contract is set to run out this summer.

That leaves just three recognised centre-backs at this moment of time, although new signing Valery and Liam Palmer could slot in when called upon.

Despite not bagging a goal in the 2023/24 campaign, Diaby could be crucial off the back of set-pieces with his height of 6ft 2ins, especially with the assurance that Bannan will be staying on for a further year.

Although Diaby may not potentially be the first name on the team sheet for Sheffield Wednesday this season, he provides necessary depth in the position and is a perfect player to be introduced off the bench.

This was the case in Sheffield Wednesday’s three consecutive wins at the end of the season, where he tightened up the defence to assure Wednesday got the crucial wins on the board.
