Tottenham ready to pounce on £20m player who's the 'best defensive midfielder' in his country - journalist

Tottenham Hotspur have a busy summer ahead of them as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his ranks ahead of next season.

Spurs have improved since the 2022/23 campaign, and their future looks bright with Ange Postecoglou at the helm.

However, there is still work to do with regards to improving the overall quality and strength in depth of the Tottenham squad.

Midfield is likely to be an area Spurs will look to strengthen, amid uncertain futures for the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Now, Ben Jacobs has provided an update regarding a Tottenham target who has been deemed the “best defensive midfielder” in his country.

Tottenham have Andre Trindade in their sights

The player in question is Fluminense star Andre Trindade, who Spurs have reportedly had on their radar for months.

Jacobs, speaking on Last Word on Spurs, claimed that, while there is an agreement between Andre and Fulham, the deal may not go ahead if Joao Palhinha stays.

This could enable the likes of Tottenham to pounce and bring Andre to north London instead of west London, suggested the transfer insider.

“I would also add Fluminense’s Andre into the mix as well,” said Jacobs.

“Fulham basically have a verbal agreement but if Joao Palhinha doesn’t leave, they won’t proceed.

“They nearly signed him in January, but Palhinha stayed.

“Now, flash forward to the summer, Fulham in the box seat still, but until Palhinha is done, the door’s open to other suitors as well.

“I know that Tottenham have been looking at that player, including at the Club World Cup, for several months.”

Liverpool have previously been linked with Andre, but speculation has cooled since last year.

Who is Tottenham target Andre Trindade?

Whoever wins the race for Andre will be getting one of Brazil’s best young midfield talents.

Back in October, Graeme Bailey told 90Min’s Talking Transfers podcast: “Many people think he’s the best defensive midfielder in the Brazilian top flight at the moment.”

Meanwhile, football data expert Pranav has described him on X as a ‘scaringly good controller of tempo’, ‘a 10/10 recyler and ball winner’ and ‘a mix of Thiago and Wijnaldum’.

At just 22 years of age, Andre has already clocked up 185 competitive appearances for Fluminense, as well as five caps for Brazil

According to Tuttosport – via Milan News – Andre has a price tag of €25million (around £20million), making him a modestly-priced option for Tottenham.
