Report: How Newcastle's transfer budget is actually looking now after PSR crisis narrowly avoided

Newcastle United have faced a tough transfer window so far with the club desperately scrambling to comply with PSR.

But following the turn of the new financial year, Newcastle can now flex their muscles in the transfer market.

It has been no secret that the Magpies have been in danger of breaching PSR, it was a big reason for the lack of business in January, and why the club found themselves frantically trying to sell players before the soft PSR deadline on June 30th.

Star players Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon were linked to rival teams, while Bruno Guimaraes’ £100m release clause expired on 24th June.

Fortunately for Newcastle, they hung on to their star names and the club were able to comply with PSR by selling academy graduate Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest, and teenage sensation Yankuba Minteh to Brighton respectively.

The departure of the two youngsters generated around £65m for the club, and provided Newcastle’s hierarchy with huge relief after a frantic week at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have a sizeable transfer budget for key positions this summer

Despite a worrisome few weeks of trying to comply with PSR in a bid to avoid a points deduction, Newcastle can look more positively at this summer’s transfer window.

July 1st brought a new financial year and with that, the club’s 2021/22 accounts have been dropped from the PSR cycle. This is key for Newcastle as it also means the club will benefit from their new commercial deals with Sela and Adidas as well as money generated from their Champions League exploits last season.

The additional money the club has received from their commercial deals will help increase their transfer budget, which is now said to stand at a very healthy amount.

Newcastle have been focused on improving three key areas of the squad, goalkeeper, centre-back and right wing. The club have already secured the signings of two goalkeepers this summer in the shape of Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest and John Ruddy, following the expiry of his contract at Birmingham City.

Newcastle also signed defender, Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth on a free transfer, a player who can operate as a centre-back or a left-back, and his versatility proved to be very attractive to Eddie Howe, who had previously signed him for Bournemouth from Bristol City.

The minimal fees involved in Newcastle’s incoming transfer business so far this season will allow the club to spend heavily on marquee signings for the right-wing position, another centre-back and a striker.

This transfer window was always viewed as one of the biggest since the club was taken over by PIF, PCP Capital Partners and the Rueben Brothers in October 2021. A squad overhaul is very much underway in what is already a busy transfer window for Newcastle.

Newcastle’s pool of targets is small but impressive. The club’s attempts to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace showed the calibre of player they are searching for this summer. Olise opted for Bayern Munich ahead of Newcastle and Chelsea but it has not deterred the Magpies from continuing their search for a similar calibre of player.

Players such as Malick Thiaw of AC Milan, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Juventus’ Frederico Chiesa have all been of interest to Newcastle this summer. Signing any of these individuals will soothe Newcastle supporters’ nerves after seeing many of their star players linked with moves away from St James’ Park this summer, including Gordon who has reportedly had his head turned by Liverpool.

Newcastle’s hierarchy will hope they can build a team around the likes of Gordon, Isak and Gumaraes and help Howe lead the club to European football again. These are nervy times at St James’ Park, this summer’s transfer window could go down as one of the biggest in the club’s history.
