Report: How much money Manchester United are now paying Newcastle for Dan Ashworth

After months of talks, Newcastle United have sanctioned the departure of Dan Ashworth.

Manchester United have been keen to appoint the sporting director, who Newcastle placed on gardening leave after their interest emerged.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who now oversees football operations at Old Trafford, has been rather critical of PIF’s conduct, hoping they’d simply allow Ashworth to up sticks and leave despite his contractual agreement.

There have been months of talks between the two clubs, with the Red Devils having seen an offer worth around £2m rejected by decision-makers at St James’ Park.

Still, Ashworth is set to move to Manchester and The Daily Telegraph have shared an update as to the kind of money involved.

They claim that while Newcastle will not be getting the £20m they initially demanded for the sporting director’s services, the sum is more than the £2m the Manchester giants first offered.

The fact that neither club wanted the deal to go to arbitration is said to have sped up negotiations.

What’s the latest news on Newcastle’s new sporting director?

It’s pretty alarming that Ashworth has been on months of gardening leave before ultimately moving on before Newcastle have appointed his replacement as sporting director.

They were rejected in their attempts to appoint Dougie Freedman, while chief scout Steve Nickson is thought to be overseeing transfer business this summer.

Recently,it was claimed that the feeling within recruitment circles is that Newcastle have actually moved on from another potential candidate in Johannes Spors.

Though clearly not the kind of appointment anyone would want to rush, Newcastle’s lack of decisive action is worth noting.

How long can they go on without one?

It would be nice to see some progress soon…
