Garth Crooks names "magnificent" Crystal Palace player in Team of the Week after display vs Liverpool

Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool at Anfield over the weekend and now one player from Oliver Glasner’s team has been named in the team of the week.

For Oliver Glasner, it won’t get much better than watching his team leave Liverpool speechless after a 1-0 win.

Crystal Palace have effectively guaranteed safety thanks to a goal from Eberechi Eze which left Jurgen Klopp mouthing the word “wow”.

But the standout performer wasn’t Eze, with the plaudits all being handed to the defence which became only the second in the league this season to deny Liverpool from scoring.

Now, Garth Crooks has named one Palace defender in his team of the week, let’s have a look at who it is and what he said.

Garth Crooks names Joachim Andersen in Team of the Week

Writing on the BBC Sport website, pundit Garth Crooks has named his team of the week for this weekend just passed.

In this team, there was one Crystal Palace player named after that huge win at Anfield.

“To win at Anfield was a magnificent result for Crystal Palace and Joachim Andersen was at the heart of this victory for the Eagles.

“The Denmark international was outstanding alongside Nathaniel Clyne, Jefferson Lerma and Tyrick Mitchell, who between them kept an impressive clean sheet.”

After this, Crooks explained just how important the win was for Palace.

“The result almost certainly means that Palace will now avoid being sucked into any sort of scrap with Everton, Nottingham Forest or Luton, who are all desperately trying to avoid relegation.”

Did Andersen deserve his place in Team of the Week?

After a few weeks of not being at his best, Andersen was immense against Liverpool.

He was incredible as Liverpool pushed hard to get an equaliser, but the Dane played a vital role in keeping them at bay.

Here are his stats from the game.

It’s clear from these stats and the feat of avoiding conceding at Anfield, that Andersen deserves his place in the team.

Quite frankly, it’s a tragedy that he isn’t joined by Lerma, Dean Henderson and Mitchell.

After this display, we cannot wait to see what happens on Saturday against West Ham.
