Tottenham fans are all in agreement about James Maddison after display v Newcastle in Australia

Tottenham Hotspur lost to Newcastle United on penalties in their post-season friendly in Melbourne, Australia.

Just days after securing themselves a spot in next season’s Europa League, the Tottenham squad jetted off to Ange Postecoglou‘s hometown.

James Maddison opened the scoring before Alexander Isak levelled the proceedings just before half-time.

A mass of changes were made at half time when Postecoglou handed a number of young prospects with an opportunity to showcase their talents.

It is now time for some of the Tottenham players to rest up ahead of the new campaign, but some still have international tournaments to play in.

However, it is the vice-captain Maddison whose performance Down Under saw Spurs fans flock to social media.

James Maddison’s display sees Tottenham fans take to social media

It has been a real mixed bag of a season for Maddison who started the game looking like the signing of the summer.

After the first month of the 2023/24 campaign, Maddison was awarded the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for August.

However, the injury he picked up against Chelsea in November seriously derailed his form when he returned in January.

But Maddison has shown some signs just before the end of the term suggesting he was closing in on returning to his best form.

And he was able to showcase his improved form against the Magpies as he showed some neat footwork inside the box before slamming the ball beyond Nick Pope.

After finding the back of the net for the first time since March, Spurs fans raced to X to share their thoughts on Maddison’s display.

One fan was clearly impressed with Maddison’s finish, saying, ‘That was beautiful’. Whilst another fan added, ‘Super finish’.

However, two fans also hailed the absence of VAR in the friendly match, one said, ‘Quality goal, no VAR to ruin the joy lol #COYS.’ And another Spurs fan stated, ‘No VAR is glorious (until it goes against us)’.

Maddison’s form has been turbulent since returning from his injury, which saw one fan say, ‘Need more of that’. Whilst another also claimed, ‘This is the Maddison we knew first half of last season’.
