Report: Tottenham now plotting £45m approach for the 'best penalty taker in the world'

Tottenham Hotspur are set for a busy summer in the transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his ranks.

The Australian coach guided Spurs to fifth place in the Premier League and a spot in the Europa League for next season.

Tottenham were much improved from the 2022/23 campaign, in which they limped to an eighth-placed finish, and will be eager to kick on in 2024/25.

There’s scope for Spurs to bolster their attacking ranks this summer, as they haven’t replaced Harry Kane with a like-for-like replacement.

Now, a report has emerged claiming Tottenham have set their sights – and have decided on a budget – for one of the Premier League’s top forwards.

According to Sportslens, Spurs are considering a move for Ivan Toney, and ‘would not look to spend more than £45million’ on the Brentford striker.

Chelsea and West Ham are also reportedly eyeing Toney, who has 72 goals and 23 assists from 141 Bees appearances.

The Blues are apparently willing to go as high as £60million, while the Hammers’ valuation is likely to be below that of Tottenham.

Brentford valued Toney at around £80million in January and understandably want as much as possible for their key asset if they are to sell him.

Tottenham may have to loosen their purse strings for Ivan Toney

Toney has proven himself in the Premier League, showing he’s truly ‘world-class‘, and there’s no doubt a big career move now beckons for him.

Last year, Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports that Toney is “one of the best attacking players in the league”, while Thomas Frank deemed him “the best penalty taker in the world”.

However, it remains to be seen whether £45million would even bring Brentford to the negotiating table.

With that in mind, Tottenham may have to loosen their purse strings further if they want any chance of getting their hands on Toney.
