3 stars at 2024 Copa America who could all be playing for Sheffield Wednesday next season - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday fans may want to keep a close eye on Copa America this summer.

Copa American gets underway on June 20th and will last until July 14th, with the Euros taking place alongside.

It’s a busy summer of football for fans and it’ll be an equally busy summer at Sheffield Wednesday, where Danny Rohl will want to ready his team for a much-improved 2023/24 campaign.

Rohl will be commentating on the Euros this summer. But he may also have an eye on the Copa America with a handful of players playing in this year’s tournament potentially set to represent the Owls next season.

Duncan McGuire – USA

Sheffield Wednesday tried and failed to sign USMNT striker Duncan McGuire from Orlando City in January, having since added him to their summer wishlist.

He’s start the 2024 MLS season in fine form with Orlando, scoring five goals in 13 appearances so far, and recently returning from a shoulder injury.

McGuire hasn’t been named in the provisional USA squad but FOX say that he’s likely to be a reserve player, or set to play in the Olympics in Paris this summer.

If USA suffer any injuries in their upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Brazil, McGuire could be promoted into the USMNT for this summer’s Copa America.

Ike Ugbo – Canada

Sheffield Wednesday loan star Ike Ugbo is in the Canada team to play in this summer’s Copa America tournament.

He’ll be hoping to replicate his scoring form with the Owls on the international stage in the USA this summer, with seven goals in 18 Championship appearances.

His form with Sheffield Wednesday last season saw him return to the Canadian national side and has made him a key summer transfer target for Rohl.

His parent club Troyes were recently relegated from the French third tier, so it looks like he certainly faces an uncertain summer ahead.

It’s claimed that any Sheffield Wednesday move for Ugbo will likely happen after Copa America.

Di’Shon Bernard – Jamaica

Fan favourite Di’Shon Bernard will also be in action at Copa America this summer, playing for Jamaica.

The centre-back will technically become a free agent whilst away on international duty with his Sheffield Wednesday contract expiring at the end of this month.

The Owls have tabled an offer for him to stay, but former Manchester United man Bernard has interest from elsewhere in the Championship, and from abroad too.

Whether or not he stays remains to be seen. But if he’s one who’s pulling on a Sheffield Wednesday shirt next season then it’ll be a huge coup for Rohl and the club.
