Report: Nuno has personally told Forest not to sell 'invaluable' Steve Cooper signing this summer

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has now personally told the club not to offload one of Steve Cooper’s signings.

Just days separate Forest from doing business in this summer’s transfer window where outgoings are set to be cruciual.

Nuno Espirito Santo is going to have to say goodbye to some of his players over the coming weeks with Forest one of the sides needing to sell this month to meet the PSR deadline on 30 June.

A number of players could be identified this summer to make the club a considerable profit after some impressive individual displays.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo are two of those players with Forest said to value the pair in excess of £50m each.

But it seems as if Nuno is now trying to prevent one specific player from being sold over the coming months at the City Ground.

Nuno wants Forest to keep Steve Cooper signing this summer

Some tough decisions are potentially going to have to be made by Evangelos Marinakis this month with Forest needing to free up some cash.

The Reds know only too well just what the consequences of falling the wrong side of PSR are having been handed their four-point deduction last season.

There could be some room for movement with players like Matt Turner receiving interest from the MLS ahead of the summer.

And Nuno is keen to avoid selling some of his best players despite Forest being able to turn a healthy profit on some of them.

According to The Athletic, Nuno is personally telling the club they should not be selling Moussa Niakhate this summer.

Forest signed Niakhate for just £8.5m in 2022 during Steve Cooper’s reign at the City Ground with a healthy profit able to be turned over the coming months if they were to sell.

However, it is believed the club are now resisting the urge to cash in on the Senegalese defender following Nuno’s advice.

What Steve Cooper said about Moussa Niakhate

It was the former Forest manager who brought the centre-back to the club in 2022 from the Bundesliga side Mainz.

Across his two seasons in the Premier League, he has made 35 league appearances with 21 of those coming this season.

Only 11 of those have come under Nuno, but he has used frequently during the final games of the 2023/24 campaign.

Having signed him back in 2022, Cooper had a lot of praise for the centre-back. “In addition to being a strong, fast and accomplished centre-back, he’s captained Mainz to their best league finish in the last five years, and his leadership experience is invaluable for our return to the Premier League,” he told the media.

“Moussa has attracted the interest of multiple clubs, but he has chosen Nottingham Forest and we are delighted to welcome him into the squad.”

Although NIakhate has not exactly been the first choice under Nuno, the possibility of cashing in on Murillo may well be having an influence on his position this summer.
