Report: Nottingham Forest believe survival would have been secured much sooner had £2m man played more often

Nottingham Forest actually believe survival would have been secured much sooner last season if one player made more appearances.

The Garibaldi narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship despite winning just 32 points from 38 games – making it one of the lowest points hauls to secure survival in recent years.

However, those at the City Ground believe the relegation battle would have been a lot less stressful if one Nottingham Forest player was available to play more often…

What Nottingham Forest think of Willy Boly

A story from The Athletic now sheds light on how highly Nottingham Forest rate Willy Boly.

It is said that the Reds feel survival would have been secured much sooner if the Ivory Coast international experienced better fortune with his injury problems.

Boly could only make 20 Premier League appearances last season due to a number of fitness issues.

Nottingham Forest won five of those 20 games in which the £2.25m man started – winning only four of the 18 outings he was absent for – which emphasises just how important he is.

The Athletic add that Nuno Espirito Santo is a huge fan of Boly – who he also coached at Wolves – although there are plans to phase the man from Melun out at the City Ground.

It is said that Nottingham Forest still hope to add another right-sided central defender to the squad this summer, with Boly now 33 years of age.

Nuno already has a replacement

In our view, it would be strange to sign a new right-footed central defender with Andrew Omobamidele already at the City Ground.

The 21-year-old was only afforded 11 Premier League appearances last season, and the Republic of Ireland international did not come cheap either, having cost £20m in a move from Norwich.

Therefore, Nottingham Forest must show faith in their investment and coach Omobamidele to the required standard, so he can step into Boly’s shoes one day.

If not, and a new signing ends up phasing the Irishman out, it would make that £20m investment look truly bizarre.
