Nottingham Forest could find Omar Richards upgrade in free agent Jose Mourinho called 'fantastic' - opinion

Nottingham Forest could potentially find the perfect upgrade for Omar Richards this summer for free.

The free agents market is one which could prove important for Nottingham Forest over the coming months with the club currently up against the PSR deadline.

It has now been revealed that Nuno Espirito Santo‘s Forest need to create around £25m from player sales before 30 June to comply with the PSR rules.

One of the players who is expected to depart this summer is Omar Richards who is still yet to even play for the club.

Having spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Forest’s sister club Olympiacos, Richards is believed to be of interest to the Greek side ahead of the summer window.

With the left-back looking likely to head off in some respect this summer, Forest will be needing more strength in the full-back position.

Forest could take gamble on former Champions League player

Nuno will be going into the summer with Harry Toffolo as the club’s main left-back and he could potentially become the only left-back within a few weeks with Richards looking set to leave.

Although losing Richards is not something that should concern Forest fans considering he has never played for the side before.

But the lack of depth at the position is certainly something which has to be on the agenda for Forest going into the summer window.

With funds potentially being watched closely having fallen short last summer of the PSR rules, a free agent option could make a lot of sense.

Ryan Sessegnon has recently departed Tottenham Hotspur following the expiration of his contract in north London.

This is a left-back who has played in the Champions League with Spurs and even scored against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

In comparison to Toffolo, Sessegnon could provide a completely different option from left-back with the former Spurs man proving himself to be an attack-minded full-back over the years.

If a club is able to get Sessegnon back on track, they could well tap into the player who scored 16 goals for Fulham in the Championship.

Ryan Sessegnon injury history

The main concern which will hang over Sessegnon is his injury history and it undoubtedly means whoever signings him this summer is taking a risk.

His time at Tottenham never really got up and going with the Englishman suffering heavily from hamstring issues, to be specific.

Taking a chance on Sessegnon will test a club’s trust in the recent surgery which Sessegnon has undergone on his hamstring which will be in hope of finally clearing up his issues.

What Jose Mourinho previously said about Ryan Sessegnon

Not only has Sessegnon played under Nuno previously, but he has also played under Jose Mourinho during their together at Spurs.

Due to his injury issues, Sessegnon only played twice under Nuno and then 10 times under the legendary Portuguese manager, Mourinho.

But Mourinho had a lot of kind words to say about the 24-year-old as he hailed Sessegnon to have similar qualities to Ashley Cole.

“I think Ryan is absolutely fantastic, I have known him since a kid in Fulham. When he comes to the first team in the Premier League, it is different to the Championship,” Mourinho told the media in 2019.

“I think Ryan can play as a left-back. Probably the best left-back in the last decade was Ashley Cole, in spite of him being from two enemy clubs, but he was fantastic. But Ryan has lots of similarities with Ashley, and he can learn how to defend.”
