talkSPORT pundit outlines Aston Villa move to solve ‘ridiculous’ Premier League PSR rule

Simon Jordan has now reacted to Aston Villa contemplating taking legal action against the Premier League.

Aston Villa have got to work early this summer as the club looks to aid their PSR concerns through sales.

Douglas Luiz’s proposed move to Juventus is gathering pace, seeing Unai Emery’s hands tied as Villa scramble to generate profit.

The rules that the Midlands club must adhere to have frustrated owner Nassef Sawiris, who revealed that he is seeking legal advice regarding the Premier League’s financial rules.

Simon Jordan compares Aston Villa PSR reaction to Manchester City approach against Premier League

Discussing Villa’s stance on the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan shared his verdict on Sawiris’ frustrations.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT about the matter, Jordan touched upon the difference between Villa’s approach against the Premier League and Manchester City’s.

“Villa are putting out a different dynamic [to Man City] which is that they’re considering their options, they’re uncomfortable with the fact, I think the seed behind that is that they got into the Champions League.

“There’s coefficients around how people get money distributions and they find themselves in a position where they’re in the same place as other teams but they’re not getting as much money as other teams and they want some sort of allowance.”

While the former Palace owner went on to admit that the sometimes “ridiculous” PSR “isn’t really underpinning what football is about”, he opposed one of Sawiris’ statements.

Sawiris said to the Financial Times, “Managing a sports team has become more like being a treasurer or a bean counter rather than looking at what your team needs. It’s more about creating paper profits, not real profits. It becomes a financial game, not a sporting game.”

To which Jordan responded on talkSPORT: “I think that’s slightly off the mark, I think ultimately you do have to have some sort of governance over the financial affairs of your football club because one day you may not be there anymore, or your business agenda might change.”

The talkSPORT pundit did commend Villa’s approach, adding that he now expects more clubs to come forward and challenge the financial rules currently in place in the Premier League.

“Whilst I think Villa are loading their guns and putting forward their perspective as to how uncomfortable they are around FFP and the governance or PSR rules, I’m not quite sure they’re following the blueprint that Man City have followed.

“Even the most acolyte of acolytes which Stefan Borson inhabits talks about when Man City waging a war against the Premier League, that kind of language isn’t being deployed at Aston Villa but it’s an interesting phenomenon and I think we’re going to see more challenges.”

Clubs could follow Villa and protest the Premier League’s financial boundaries

Villa aren’t the only side to be affected by PSR, with every club in the Premier League combatting their own situation to adhere to the rules.

Sawiris argued that PSR is ‘anti-competitive’, with clubs such as Villa ultimately having to suffer to keep up with the rest despite progressing significantly over the years.

The public rant from Sawiris in Villa’s corner could inspire a chain reaction, just as has been seen in the league already with issues regarding VAR.

A knock-on effect could encourage sides to step forward and protest the running of the league, with the current financial rules having a detrimental effect on many.
